About Melissa

Melissa brings a diverse background in healthcare, public health, and community advocacy, with a strong passion for serving underserved populations. She currently serves as the Spanish Programs Coordinator for NAMI KDK, where she previously interned before transitioning into her current role. Her work focuses on increasing access to mental health education, support, and resources within the Hispanic community while helping reduce stigma surrounding mental health care.

Melissa graduated from Northern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health and a minor in Nutrition. She also earned an Associate of Science degree from College of DuPage, where she additionally completed coursework in the Surgical Technology program and obtained her CNA license. Her educational and professional experiences have allowed her to develop a broad understanding of healthcare systems and patient care across multiple settings.

Her healthcare journey began at the age of 18, working closely with older adults living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Through this experience, she developed a deep appreciation for compassionate caregiving and the importance of preserving dignity and quality of life for vulnerable populations. At 21, she began working for UChicago Medicine as a Patient Care Technician, gaining experience across a wide range of hospital units, including medical-surgical, intensive care, labor and delivery, and emergency medicine. She later transitioned into working exclusively in the emergency department, where she continues to serve patients today.

Passionate about learning every aspect of healthcare, Melissa is especially driven by her commitment to serving her community. As a proud member of the Hispanic community herself, she feels a strong personal connection to the families she works with and understands the cultural and systemic barriers many individuals face when seeking healthcare and mental health support. Through her work, she strives to create safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive spaces where individuals feel heard, respected, and empowered to seek the care they deserve.

Outside of her professional work, Melissa enjoys traveling with her fiancé to tattoo conventions across the country, where they collect unique and meaningful art pieces. Her fiancé works professionally as a tattoo artist, and together they share a deep appreciation for creativity and artistic expression. At home, they enjoy spending time with their beloved cat, Kevin, who is a very special part of their family.
